TL;DR
Unique molecule (Pyrroloquinoline quinone) that stimulates 'mitochondrial biogenesis'
Moderate evidence for improving memory and processing speed
Moderate evidence for reducing inflammation and improving sleep
Synergizes exceptionally well with CoQ10
Relatively expensive: ~$25-40/month
Best for: Mitochondrial health, 'cellular aging' prevention
What it is
PQQ is a vitamin-like compound found in trace amounts in soil and some foods (like kiwi and green peppers). Its 'superpower' is its ability to trigger the growth of new mitochondria in aging cells. Since mitochondrial decline is a hallmark of aging, PQQ is a popular longevity supplement.
What the research says
PQQ is a 'neuro-regenerative' agent. Evidence. A double-blind trial showed that 20mg of PQQ improved memory and attention in middle-aged and elderly adults. The CoQ10 Combo. When PQQ is taken with CoQ10, the cognitive benefits are significantly amplified, as PQQ builds new mitochondria while CoQ10 helps the existing ones work better. [1]
Mitochondrial support may theoretically benefit cardiac energy production, but cardiovascular-specific human data is extremely limited. The Harris study [ref2] showed some mitochondrial metabolism changes, but direct cardiac outcomes remain unstudied. Currently more theoretical promise than proven cardiovascular benefit. [2][3]
